Journey of Miles—Part I

Enter a little boy—raven black hair and blue eyes—born in a small North Carolina town to parents that truly love each other but have not exchanged vows. His name—Miles Ian Everhart, born on April 16, 1982. Even at birth, he was a lady killer. Second born to Julia Abigail Winston and Maxwell Ian Everhart, Miles currently has one sibling—an older brother name Leviticus Maxwell Everhart, Levi for short. The family was very happy in the beginning, but Maxwell began to pursue his ambitions. Now just an accountant, he wanted something more. He had bigger goals—bigger dreams—dreams that took him away from his family. Unable to support him in his endeavors, Julia decided to end the relationship and she and Maxwell went their separate ways, splitting parenting responsibilities for Levi and Miles. Miles was only a year old at the time and Levi was four.

Just a year later, Julia and Maxwell each found significant others and married within three months of one another. Julia was now Julia Anderson, wife of successful Huntersville horse rancher and stable owner Oliver Anderson. Maxwell—now a hopeful for state office—has taken a wife named Natalie. Miles and Levi are not pleased with either of their parents’ nuptials but are even more surprised when a year later, Natalie and Maxwell present a half sister, Victoria and the subsequent year, Julia and Oliver present yet another half sister, Emily Alexis. At this point, Levi is seven years old, Miles is four and Victoria has just breached a year.

As far back as he could remember, Miles felt the disdain from his stepfather, Oliver. He had no way of knowing why Oliver disliked him so much. After all, he was just a toddler, but even a toddler knows when he is not wanted. With no explanation of why he was disliked, young Miles automatically assumed that he must be doing something wrong to deserve this treatment since his stepfather was so much nicer to his brother, Levi. Everything became worse when his sister, Emily, was born.

Emily was the apple of her father’s eye. Oliver afforded his daughter every luxury and her extended family—paternal aunts, uncles, and grandparents—treated her like the heir to the royal throne. The stepchildren were all but forgotten. Oliver mostly ignored Levi who was pretty much the Golden Child before Emily’s birth. However, Oliver was unusually cruel to Miles. He would degrade and humiliate him at every turn. As a toddler, he would make Miles do chores in the stables then trip him so that he landed face down in piles of manure and refuse to let him clean himself. Workers were afraid to say anything for fear that they would lose their jobs. Mostly, Oliver was mentally cruel—tormenting young Miles in ways that made him feel worthless while his mother worked in real estate. Oliver convinced Miles that the treatment was his fault—that he reminded Julia of Maxwell and caused her pain so Miles had to be punished.

What would you expect a toddler to believe?

As Miles grew older, the torments became worse. As a five year old, Miles was often bound with rope around his arms and left in the barn with the animals in the heat. One time, a new ranch hand found him there and released him from the ropes, instructing him to go inside and get a drink, which he did. Exhausted from the heat, Miles proceeded to his room to rest.

On his way, he hears the distinct sounds of moaning. He followed the sounds to a room he had never entered simply because there was no reason to enter. He opened the door and discovered what he thought was a prison cell of some sort. He only recognized the shackles and chains and a bed—everything else was foreign to him. He also recognized his stepfather, naked and standing behind a woman who was bent over and tied to some kind of bench. He is pushing his hips against her while she is making the sounds that drew Miles to the room.

Miles has no idea what he is watching, but he is spellbound, standing here watching his stepfather naked with a woman who is clearly not his mother. Oliver grunts a few times, then presses himself against the woman hard, now standing still and yelling bad words. When he has finished, he turns to see Miles standing in the door and fury fills his eyes.

You nosey little bastard!” He yells as he runs naked towards a shell-shocked Miles. Oliver snatches the youngster and locks him a closet, threatening him with severe bodily harm if he dares to make a sound.

Miles has no idea how long it was before Oliver came back to get him, but now Oliver is fully dressed. He drags Miles by his thick black hair back to the strange room. “You want to be nosey you little meddling bastard, well come on in!” He spit as he pushes Miles into the room. Miles takes a better look at the space—black walls and things that he has never seen before. Most of this stuff looks like the things you use for horses! Why would he have them in the house?

You’re nothing but a troublesome, rebellious, pain in the ass! I tell you to call me Dad and you refuse,” he spit.

Mom said I didn’t have to call you Dad because I already have a dad,” Miles says softly. He only knows this man as Oliver or Ollie… this is not his dad.

Well, he ain’t here, is he?” Oliver taunts. “If you tell your mother about this room, if you tell her what you saw today, I’ll kill you all—your brother, your mother, your father… all of you. I’ll kill you all and bury your bodies in the pasture where nobody will find you. Do you understand, you little bastard!?”

Miles is afraid… very afraid. He believes that Oliver will do what he says and Miles nods feverishly, terror in his eyes. “Good! Don’t forget it!” Oliver binds and gags Miles and leaves him in the room for the rest of the day with no food or water—terrified to tell anyone what is going on with him.

So tell me what you think of part I of our main male character’s backstory, and go on and read the other parts in the menu on the left!!

  13. Sewinkel says:

Well it is, of course, gripping and sad and wonderfully written – just like the story is it setting up. If a playroom is the scene of Miles’ torture, will that propel him to becoming a Dom or make all BDSM guilt by association? I’m riveted already!

    • Tee hee hee! I think you will like the way the bakstory develops. I don’t want my rewrite to stray to far from what I’ve already written, so I will develop the backstory to somewhat meld to what we already have…but it will be a little different.
